| Figure 8b. Charts of the British Cardiac Society, British Hyperlipidaemia Association, British Hypertension Society and Diabetes UK for men and women (a) without diabetes and (b) with diabetes. Risk is absolute risk expressed as percentage over the next 10 years, which is the number of men and women in each 100 with similar risk factors who would be expected to develop coronary heart disease (CHD; new angina, fatal or nonfatal myocardial infraction) over the next 10 years. To use the charts, find the point where the horizontal co-ordinate for the patient's systolic blood pressure (SBP) intersects with the vertical co-ordinate for the patient's ratio of serum total cholesterol-to-high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (TC:HDL). The charts are inapplicable for familial hypercholesterolaemia, patients with established CHD or other atherosclerotic disease and patients with renal disease including diabetic nephropathy. They will also underestimate risk in patients with an adverse family history of CHD, type 1 diabetes and in migrants for the Indian subcontinent. Clinical judgement should always be exercised in their use. The ratio of TC:HDL may be calculated in either mmol/L or mg/dL, but the same units must be used for both [British Cardiac Society, 2000 and 1998]. © The University of Manchester. |
