Essential hypertension, or hypertension of unknown etiology, accounts for 90-95% of all causes of hypertension. It tends to have a familial aggregation, resulting from a collection of genetically based diseases or syndromes with a multifactorial inheritance. BP is usually easy to control with one or two drugs in young patients with uncomplicated essential hypertension, making that diagnosis unlikely in this patient. Furthermore, the absence of a family history tends not to favor this etiology.
